PREGNANCY INTENTIONS OF PEOPLE LIVING WITH HUMAN IMMUNODEFICIENCY VIRUS (HIV) IN EDO STATE, NIGERIA

Mother to Child Transmission (MTCT) accounts for 90% of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), despite this high prevalence, HIV positive individuals have high level of pregnancy intentions. This study examined pregnancy intentions among People Living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (PLHIV) using selected secondary health facilities in Edo State. A cross-sectional descriptive study design was used in achieving the objectives. Participants were sampled using convenient sampling techniques; the population was 255 respondents which was determined using Taro Yamane sample size calculation. A self-structured questionnaire was utilized in data collection with a reliability computed at 0.84 using Cronbach alpha coefficient. Data were analyzed with descriptive and inferential statistics. The percentage level of pregnancy intention in this study was 73.7%. The major influencing factors were: not having the desired number of children with relative frequency of 0.25, desire for parenthood (0.19), partner request (0.12) and the search for a male child (0.13). There were high level pregnancy intention participants and meeting this need without Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT) could further increase the pandemic of this infection.
