INFLUENCE OF PARENTING STYLES ON ADOLESCENTS’ SELF-ESTEEM IN OGBOMOSHO, OYO-STATE, NIGERIA.

Introduction: Parenting is a complex activity that includes many specific behaviors that work together to influence children’s outcomes. The evolution of one’s self-esteem is the family and the kinds of interaction that occur among family members. Self-esteem developed during childhood becomes the foundation for adults' self-esteem. The self-esteem of a person has the potential to make or break him/her in his/her personal and professional life

Aim: The broad objective is to determine the influence of parenting styles on adolescents’ self-esteem in Ogbomosho 

Design: This study employed a cross-sectional research design and a multi-stage random sampling technique was adopted in selecting participants from the population. A self-administered standard questionnaire was distributed to 415 adolescents from three public secondary schools and three private secondary schools in Ogbomosho. Data obtained was analyzed using SPSS version 16.0

Result: The study revealed that most respondents were of the Yoruba ethnic group (92.7%) and were Christians with 84%. The study population exhibited a good level of self-esteem with a mean score of 19.33. The authoritative parenting style was the most adopted style of parenting with a mean score of 17.12. Pearson correlation coefficient test showed a positive correlation of authoritative parenting style with adolescent self-esteem 

 

Conclusion: A health promotion awareness program for parents on the impact of parenting styles on adolescent self-esteem can be organized to further improve the relationship between adolescents and their parents.
