Influence of psychosocial therapy on the recovery process of depressed patients among the University of Ibadan Community

Background: This study examined the influence of psychosocial therapy on the recovery rate of depressed patients in the University of Ibadan community.

Methodology: A descriptive research design was adopted for the study. The study’s target population consisted of two hundred and fifty patients with emotional imbalances who attended the psychiatric clinic on a weekly basis. A simple random sampling technique was used to select two hundred and fifty respondents for the study. The data were collected using self-administered questionnaires and analyzed using Pearson r correlation to test three hypotheses at a 0.05 level of significance.

Results: The study established that there was a significant relationship between cognitive therapy and recovery (r =.350, p<.001). The study also revealed that there was a significant relationship between physical exercise and recovery (r = .545, p< .001). The study also revealed that there was a significant relationship between counselling therapy and recovery (r = 0.926, p> .05).

Conclusion: Based on these findings, there is a need to understand the pattern of depressive disorders that occurs in the community to determine the needs and period of the treatment regimen. There should be an examination of models of treatment that are cost-effective and can be easily adapted in a grass-roots setting to effectively manage depression rather than the drug alone.
